Toxic megacolon is seen in up to 10% of patients with UC. Gaseous distention of the transverse colon to beyond 6 cm is noted (although this is variable). Also note, in this patient, that within the descending colon there is a band of low-density corresponding to the submucosal edema and fatty proliferation, both signs of UC. Toxic megacolon has up to a 30% mortality.
