Question What is the protocol for patient prep when performing contrast
studies while taking Glucophage and Glucovance?
Answer Steven N. Sireci, M.D. Responds:

Authoritative information on this topic can be obtained in one of two ways:

  1. By contacting Bristol-Myers Squibb® the maker of both of those antidiabetic drugs, and reviewing the package inserts and other information Bristol-Meyers Squibb may provide about them, and

  2. By consulting the section entitled "Metformin (Glucophage) Therapy and the Risk of Lactic Acidosis" found on pages 17-18 in the ACR Manual on Contrast Media (4th Edition, available from the American College of Radiology).
The ACR Manual states the following in a summary paragraph on the topic:

"Therefore, metformin should be discontinued before or at the time of the procedure, withheld for 48 hours after the procedure, and reinstated only after renal function has been re-evaluated and found to be normal."
